About Us

North Texas Health & Wellness - DentonWhat is a Nurse Practitioner?

A Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse (RN) who has completed an advanced training program in a medical specialty such as pediatrics or internal medicine.  This training is usually at the Masters or Doctorate level.  A Nurse Practitioner can function as a primary direct provider of health care and prescribe medications and perform many of the health care services that only physicians in the past performed.  These services may include both illness and well care, alternative medicine, homeopathic medicine, herbal medicine, minor surgical procedures and newborn circumcisions for example.  Nurse Practitioners will consult with or refer to their Physician colleagues, if needed, for complex health care problems.
